HOLISTIC INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S WELFARE

The Astronauts Collective

Since 2022, TAC has organised a Career Human Library, bringing in professionals from diverse and unique backgrounds such as a SAF Officer, Horticulturalist and Social Service Practitioner for our students. This usually happens on the final official lesson of the year and serves as an opportunity for our students to explore a thoughtful path forward after their N-levels.

MENDAKI

In 2023, the N-level examination consisted of a digital component for the very first time. The English Paper 1 was an e-exam and we needed to prepare our students for this switch. MENDAKI (the Choa Chu Kang satellite center in particular), provided a space and laptops for all our students at no cost. We were able to conduct a preparatory lesson and our Prelim English examination at the centre.

Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore

In 2019, Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore (FRCS) took notice of ground-up community project and saw its potential to grow. They proposed to be our benefactor and graciously supplied us with a large classroom to use rent-free from 2019 to 2022. On top of this, FRCS stands as a registered charity with Institutions of Public Character (IPC) status. Project Starfish was able to raise funds via Rotary and be part of the Tote Board's Enhanced Fund-Raising (EFR) Program which offered a dollar-for-dollar matching.

AMP Singapore

AMP Singapore approached us in 2021 when we needed their support in covering the examination fees of one of our students whose family was struggling financially. Despite the tight deadline, they came through for the youth and the youth successfully completed their N-levels. AMP continues to be a prominent supporter of our work and a strategic partner, financially supporting youths who are motivated, but lack financial resources.

SMU Law Outreach Club

Since 2021, SMU Law Outreach Club has consistently supported us on building a safe environment for our students. This was especially important after we became a registered society in 2020. We now have PDPA and safety procedures in place and have refined our constitution to ensure that our society and organisation operates with the interests of our students at its heart.

Singapore University of Social Sciences

Project Starfish is the official Community Partner of SUSS. Students of the university must be involved in community initiatives as part of their curriculum. Project Starfish took part in the virtual SUSS Community Engagement (CE) Fair in 2021 which allowed us to recruit several students as volunteers. Project Starfish also participates in their annual Community Partner appreciation events where the team gets to network with other non-profit organisations.

Impart

Impart and Project Starfish share a mission of supporting youths who are out of the formal education system. Impart has been invaluable in supporting vulnerable youths who require extra attention and tuition assistance. In 2021, Impart, provided additional 1-1 tuition to four young mothers and two academically weak students in our programme. Impart has also extended their tuition to Project Starfish graduates who wish to sit for O-Levels after their N-levels.

LBKM

In 2023, the N-level examination consisted of a digital component for the very first time. The English Paper 1 was an e-exam and we needed to prepare our students for this switch. MENDAKI (the Choa Chu Kang satellite center in particular), provided a space and laptops for all our students at no cost.
